By 2040, Luton envisions itself as a healthy, equitable, and sustainable town where everyone can flourish, leaving no room for poverty.

This vision, spanning from 2020 to 2040, has been meticulously crafted in collaboration with the town's residents and partners, reflecting their collective hopes for the future of this vibrant community, home to 225,300 people.

The vision comprises five key priorities, each contributing to the overarching goal for Luton:

Inclusive Economy: Cultivating an economy that attracts investment, supporting business growth, job creation, and increased incomes.

Wellbeing: Enhancing the well-being of the population, addressing health inequalities, and ensuring a high quality of life for all, enabling everyone to reach their full potential.

Child-Friendly Town: Creating an environment where children grow up content, healthy, and secure, with a meaningful voice and ample opportunities for their growth.

Climate Responsibility: Confronting the climate emergency and working toward becoming a net-zero town, embracing sustainable growth and a healthier environment.

Community Empowerment: Fostering a strong and empowered community founded on principles of fairness, local pride, and equitable representation for all residents.

Poverty and inequality cast a long shadow over individuals' life outcomes and opportunities. Education, health, and employment can all be adversely affected by poverty. Consequently, eliminating poverty is at the core of Luton's vision.

However, Luton's vision transcends economic growth alone. The Council is dedicated to cultivating a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive community.

Luton's vision underscores the significance of environmental sustainability, social cohesion, nurturing a child-friendly environment, and strategies to enhance population well-being.

Since 2020, the Council has diligently worked to fulfill the objectives of this vision, with numerous town-wide projects and initiatives brought to fruition. Some notable developments include:

  • Barnfield College (completed in 2022)
  • Enhancements to the Lewsey Sports Centre (completed in 2021)
